³⁶ Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: ³⁷ those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were ^(C)35,400.

Jehoiachin Reigns in Judah

^8 (A)Jehoiachin was ^(B)eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. ⁹ And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, ^(C)according to all that his father had done.

Jerusalem Captured

¹⁰ At that time the servants of ^(D)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up to Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. ¹¹ And ^(E)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to the city while his servants were besieging it, ^12 (F)and Jehoiachin the king of Judah gave himself up to the king of Babylon, himself and his mother and his servants and his officials and his palace officials. ^(G)The king of Babylon took him prisoner ^(H)in the eighth year of his reign ¹³ and carried off all the treasures of the house of the Lord ^(I)and the treasures of the king's house, ^(J)and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold in the temple of the Lord, ^(K)which Solomon king of Israel had made, ^(L)as the Lord had foretold. ^14 (M)He carried away all Jerusalem and all the officials and all the mighty men of valor, ^(N)10,000 captives, ^(O)and all the craftsmen and the smiths. None remained, ^(P)except the poorest people of the land. ^15 (Q)And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon. The king's mother, the king's wives, his officials, and the chief men of the land he took into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. ¹⁶ And the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon all the men of valor, ^(R)7,000, and the craftsmen and the metal workers, 1,000, all of them strong and fit for war. ^17 (S)And the king of Babylon ^(T)made Mattaniah, ^(U)Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, ^(V)and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Ezekiel's Wife Dies

¹⁵ The word of the Lord came to me: ^16 (A)“Son of man, behold, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke; yet you shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down. ¹⁷ Sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. ^(B)Bind on your turban, and ^(C)put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, ^(D)nor eat the bread of men.” ¹⁸ So I spoke to the people in the morning, and ^(E)at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did ^(F)as I was commanded.

¹⁹ And ^(G)the people said to me, “Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are acting thus?” ²⁰ Then I said to them, “The word of the Lord came to me: ²¹ ‘Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ^(H)Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the yearning of your soul, and ^(I)your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword. ²² And ^(J)you shall do as I have done; ^(K)you shall not cover your lips, ^(L)nor eat the bread of men. ^23 (M)Your turbans shall be on your heads and your shoes on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but ^(N)you shall rot away in your iniquities and groan to one another. ²⁴ Thus shall Ezekiel be to you ^(O)a sign; ^(P)according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then ^(Q)you will know that I am the Lord God.’

²⁵ “As for you, ^(R)son of man, surely on the day when I take from them ^(S)their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes and their soul's desire, and also their sons and daughters, ^26 (T)on that day a fugitive will come to you to report to you the news. ²⁷ On that day your mouth ^(U)will be opened to the fugitive, and you shall speak and be no longer mute. ^(V)So you will be a sign to them, and ^(W)they will know that I am the Lord.”

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

⁴¹ Peter said, “Lord, ^(A)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” ⁴² And the Lord said, “Who then is ^(B)the faithful and ^(C)wise ^(D)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? ^43 (E)Blessed is that servant^[a] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ⁴⁴ Truly, I say to you, ^(F)he will set him over all his possessions. ⁴⁵ But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master ^(G)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and ^(H)get drunk, ⁴⁶ the master of that servant will come ^(I)on a day when he does not expect him and ^(J)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. ^47 (K)And that servant who ^(L)knew his master's will but ^(M)did not get ready ^(N)or act according to his will, will receive a ^(O)severe beating. ^48 (P)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, ^(Q)will receive a light beating. ^(R)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Paul Opposes Peter

¹¹ But ^(A)when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him ^(B)to his face, because he stood condemned. ¹² For before certain men came from James, ^(C)he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing ^(D)the circumcision party.^{[a] 13} And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ But when I saw that their ^(E)conduct was not in step with ^(F)the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas ^(G)before them all, “If you, though a Jew, ^(H)live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Justified by Faith

¹⁵ We ourselves are Jews by birth and not ^(I)Gentile sinners; ¹⁶ yet we know that ^(J)a person is not justified^[b] by works of the law ^(K)but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, ^(L)because by works of the law no one will be justified.

¹⁷ But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found ^(M)to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! ¹⁸ For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. ¹⁹ For through the law I ^(N)died to the law, so that I might ^(O)live to God. ²⁰ I have been ^(P)crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives ^(Q)in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, ^(R)who loved me and ^(S)gave himself for me. ²¹ I do not nullify the grace of God, for ^(T)if righteousness^[c] were through the law, ^(U)then Christ died for no purpose.
